Teaching with Pinterest

Pinterest is a very powerful social networking tool that not only connects you with other people, but it also connects you with articles that match your interest. Pinterest is powerful in education because it gives you the ability to share and compile the information that interests you with others. This is very important when doing research and working with other teammates in order to solve a mathematical problem, or to further investigate a scientific topic. The grade I would recommend using pinterest for education is in High school student’s grades 9-12. Particularly, I would expose pinterest to students that are in the 11th grade science, such as physics and chemistry. The reason is because they will write articles, share pictures of their projects, and also give and receive feedback of their own assignments and their classmates. This way the students will have less of a probability of being lost during an assignment and learn more effectively.

Another reason that makes Pinterest a powerful tool for teaching and learning is that it increases feedback and engagement dramatically in a students work. It increases feedback because a student can post their work on their pinboard and their classmates can see what they are working on, this can help students because if they feel they are lost or not doing the work correctly, they can see what they might be doing wrong.  Pinterest increases their engagement because pinterest is a social tool. You can exchange feedback with classmates or even with the people you are following of a subject that interest you. This can be used beyond high school, in a college or even doctoral level.  We all learn with technology and should not be intimidated by technology. As teachers we must be able to understand all the different types of social technologies available to our students. Pinterest is very popular with high school students, and I believe they will be very encouraged to see that they can use pinterest in their classroom.

As Teachers pinterest in especially powerful in teaching Physics and Chemistry because you are able to see how other teachers are using teaching methods in their classroom. Pinterest allows you to also share activities, knowledge, and various connections that can improve your classroom’s learning curve. This is why pinterest is an effective teaching and learning tool, because it increases teaching and learning by increasing engagement and feedback.
