I admire the teacher Mrs. Jane for being
brave enough to actually use wiki site on a classroom that is 6th
grade. I think that many issues can arise from having a young audience,
especially kids entering middle school use applications for learning. The first
thing that comes to mind is the fact that Mrs. Jane was able to acknowledge
that the students were not working in equal terms with others. There was no
teamwork, and many assignments were not being done by all of the groups, but
rather only one student in the classroom was completing them. The fact that she
was able to see this through the app is very important, because that means that
she can see what she is doing wrong. What I would do to improve this is to gather
the students that understood the lesson, and spread them to the groups that
didn’t. I would also guide the groups so that they could grasp the assignment
better. The way to do this is to engage the students more by asking questions,
generating discussion by making a sort of debate in the classroom to see where
everyone is standing. The reason this has to be done is because they are 6th
grade students and wiki spaces is very complex. I think that they need to grasp
the actual assignment better so they can actually use it for learning. The
reason I say this is because there was students who were focused on making the
wiki space look decorated with fonts, rather than focus on the actual
assignment. This is because they were barely beginning to understand wiki
spaces. I think the students are very bright; the fact that they were able to
actually get things going surprises me. I think they can actually pull through
using wiki spaces; they just need more engagement from the instructor so they
can get the job done. I also think that
by being more engaging with the students you will be able to save more time,
since it is a 6th grade classroom it is very necessary to ensure
that the children are focused. I think that many challenges in the classroom
are because the instructor does not engage enough with the students. The wiki sites have an option to create a
poll, which I think can be very useful in generating debate in the classroom
depending on the topic. Also even though it is a group assignment, one thing
the instructor does not mention is how long will the project take, and the number
of people in the group. I think that a group of 4 people would be adequate. I
also think that the instructor needs to give small objectives that can be
completed daily so that the students are not lost.
Hello Frederick,
ResponderBorrarI agreed with you about how Mrs. Jane’s open mind to integrate wiki to her students is admirable. It is good to know that Mrs. Jane was aware of her students’ progress and struggles. Teachers need to continue monitoring students’ progress especially when students are working in groups. You are right about the number of students per group should no more than four people.
I also applaud Jane for incorporating technology in to the group assignment. I think the reason she had the issues she did with the assignment is that there were no clear expectations set with the students. i think she could have broken the assignment down in chunks to help the groups that were struggling. Using a peer review form would also help ensure participation from all members of each group.
